The History of DC and the Experience of an Iona in Mission Trip Group After a Long Work Week by Steve Burth

May 25th, 2013 - Day 6

This day in my opinion was an awesome fun day besides all the walking, weather changes, and the crowds. This experience was an immersion of history and culture.

The monuments were the testament of time of who helped form the nation we know today. From Jefferson, for, even Sherman, many more monuments stood for what we cherish today. Today was even more special with the fact that is is memorial day weekend and we saw many veterans ranging from WWII to Vietnam. It was an honor seeing war memorials decorated and honored for what these men did for our country. As I shook some of their hands, I made the notion that they made the ultimate sacrifice for us to live a content life here.

In similar ways we seem to forget to recognize veterans sometimes as much as we neglect the homeless. People today need to respect all who make the ultimate sacrifice or have the inability for a home. Awareness has to be applied and these people can be treated better by the public at large.

Finally we visited the Natural History Museum and the Air and Space Museum. These places serve as places of enlightenment to show the public natural history and aeronautics, to giant squids to the Apollo Space Capsule. Through this documentation of our existence and Gods work, I have seen the evolution of man and beast to our concurring of the air and beyond. God has made all things a possibility. It is a wonder to learn about Gods work on this earth through nature and humanity. In addition, we learned about the metro subway. It is better than the NY, cleaner and carpeted.

All together DC is a city of history and wonder. Our service has impacted all we came into contact. We turned the world around. We were prepared to move and we did. Our team is the best. We had so much fun, drama, and craziness.
